Mikah Rector-Brooks

Job Title / Role
Account Coordinator

What’s the single most essential book, film, TV show, or audio series that change-makers need to read, watch or listen to?

The two books I always revisit are Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela and Rules for Revolutionaries: How Big Organizing Can Change Everything by Becky Bond and Zack Exley. I treat these like textbooks for everything social change, organizing, and creating a better world.

Mikah is a passionate strategist with five years of experience building a more equitable future. As an Account Coordinator at McPherson Strategies, they support mission-driven clients with media outreach, visibility opportunities, and purposeful storytelling.

Social impact has been the focus of their career since the beginning. Before joining McPherson Strategies, Mikah was the Press Associate at March For Our Lives, where they coordinated media relations, thought leadership, and youth organizing efforts. With several policy wins under their belt, Mikah leverages their communications expertise to champion meaningful change, like the federal Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and, most recently, a name change reform package for trans Michiganders.

Mikah has received many awards for their advocacy, including the 2023-2025 Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service, which took them abroad to collaborate with gun violence prevention and LGBTQ+ rights non-profits. They have also appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Teen Vogue, and HuffPost and written for the Detroit Free Press. Mikah graduated from the University of Michigan with honors in Political Science, Communication and Media, and a minor in Gender, Race, and Nation. Outside of work, they love exploring art scenes and finding vintage treasures.
